Proposed Biomass Recycling Facility at New Bolton Center

Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center will host a public information meeting for West Marlborough Township residents regarding a proposed Biomass Recycling Facility to be located on the portion of Penn Vet’s campus at 420 Bartram Road in West Marlborough Township.

Residents of East Marlborough Township can attend.

The University of Pennsylvania is currently exploring the possibility of constructing a Biomass Recycling Facility at the School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) New Bolton Center. The facility would be situated at 420 Bartram Road, on part of Penn Vet’s campus in West Marlborough Township. It would exclusively manage the disposal of mortality from Penn Vet’s equine and livestock operations, supporting Penn Vet’s sustainability initiatives.

All farms with equine and livestock in Pennsylvania must comply with the Pennsylvania Domestic Animal Act, which establishes legal standards for disposing of deceased animals. The state permits five disposal methods, with biomass recycling recommended by the Pennsylvania Agricultural Ombudsman Program as the preferred option for farms across the state that raise equine, livestock, and poultry. The proposed facility would be a single-story, approximately 6,900-square-foot, fully enclosed, concrete-floored, bio-secure, modern biomass recycling building.

The project is still in its exploratory phase. Initial discussions occurred with West Marlborough Township officials in late January to present the concept and understand municipal rules and approval procedures. If the project advances, it will also require review and approval from the Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture and Environmental Protection.
