The Planning Commission meets on December 27, 2011 at 7:30 p.m.  (CANCELLED for lack of agenda)

FIRE PROTECTION ON TAX BILL - Please note that the item for “Fire Protection” on some tax bills is actually a fee for maintenance of fire hydrants.  All properties within 780 feet of a hydrant are required to pay.  All of the proceeds from this fee go to the two water companies to maintain the hydrants; none of the funds go to support the local fire companies.

We urge you to continue to support your local fire company volunteers.

East Marlborough Township Carved from the Unwieldy Marlborough Township back in 1729

William PennEast Marlborough Township was established by the Pennsylvania State Legislature in 1729. East and West Marlborough Townships were carved out of the larger Marlborough Township, which was considered too unwieldy. Pennsylvania rural Townships were originally established by the Commonwealth legislature to provide a network of roads to assist farmers in getting their crops to market.

Today, maintenance of Township roads is the primary responsibility of Townships of the Second Class. Later, Zoning Regulations were added to the responsibilities of local municipalities. East Marlborough is sixteen square miles in area and includes the world famous horticultural displays at Longwood Gardens, as well as New Bolton Center, the veterinary school of the University WWII Township Road Crewof Pennsylvania, where pioneering animal research is done We are the caretakers of several surviving Penn Oak Trees which were young trees when William Penn walked this land. In addition, there are several surviving stations of the Underground Railroad which assisted escaping slaves on their journey to freedom in the north. Local groups are working to restore one of the Underground Railroad, located on US Route One. Historic Unionville Village is listed on the National Register of Historic buildings and towns. Sleepy Marlborough Village, with its original buildings, including a Quaker Meeting House, is located at the intersection of Marlborough Road and Marlborough Spring Road. We invite you to visit the area in person.

UNIONVILLE AREA REGIONAL PLAN

In May, 2009, East Marlborough, West Marlborough, and Newlin Townships applied to Chester County to receive grant funding through the Vision Partnership Program to prepare a regional comprehensive plan.  The County agreed to provide funding for this collaborative effort between the three townships and Chester County, which has resulted in a comprehensive plan document that will help guide future land use decisions for the region.  Go to http://www.theregionalplan.com/ to view the accepted plan.

OPEN BURNING

NOTICE: With yard clean up on everyone's mind, you should all know that burning of brush and leaves is a very problematic issue. East Marlborough discourages burning; the Township prohibits the smoke and air pollution that travels onto neighbor's property. It is impossible to burn leaves at any time without creating dangerous and bothersome smoke. Dry brush can sometimes be burned, PROVIDED that there is no wind to carry any smoke, odors, or sparks onto adjacent properties. You may bring bagged leaves and branches to the Township building. Take them to the back of the property. SECCRA Landfill, on Route 926, will also accept bagged leaves, as well as branches and brush. The material must be transported in a covered vehicle. The East Marlborough road crew will chip up branches which have fallen in a storm; we will not provide chipping service for trees and branches that the landowner has taken down. You may call the Township Public Works to arrange for chipping service at 610-444-1375. Please consider your neighbors and the environment before igniting any brush fires.
